1918 King George V Gold Indian Sovereign Information
As a way of identifying the mint locations of sovereigns, international mints mark their sovereigns with a letter signifying the manufacturer of origin.
This 1918 7.988g Sovereign coin is struck from 22 carat gold and is legal British tender, but the coin's Indian origin is marked by the ‘I’ stamped on the reverse of the coin, placed above the date.
During WWI German U-boats targeted the Britsh Fleet transporting gold from South Africa to London. In order to prevent this from happening and to aid the British in the war effort, gold was smuggled to India to be struck into sovereigns. After the success of the World War, it was no longer considered a necessity and the coins were never minted in India again.
