Gold Sovereign Coin (Elizabeth II Decimal) Information

Mixed year Queen Elizabeth II Decimal Sovereign containing 7.98 grams of 22ct gold. As always, the reverse of the coin features Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George and the Dragon, while the obverse displays one of three portraits of The Queen:

The Machin Portrait, 1968
Sculptor Arnold Machin, born in Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1911 was chosen to produce the second definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Although the effigy was commissioned in 1968, no Sovereigns featuring the new design were produced until 1974. John Betjeman described the portait as "racy", but Machin was keen "to produce a design with charm and dignity and yet without sentimentality."

The Maklouf Portrait, 1985
The third portrait of The Queen first appeared in 1985 and was designed by Raphael Maklouf, who was born in Jerusalem in 1937. Maklouf's depiction was cut-off above the shoulders and "took less time to complete than it sometimes took photographers to get the right lighting and take the photographs.”

The Rank-Broadley Portrait, 1998
A constant presence on circulating and commemorative coins since 1998, the fourth definitive coinage portrait was created by Surrey-born sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. A strong design which took many months to complete, it is soon to be replaced by an new effigy created by Jody Clark.
